SSD Buying Guide: NVMe vs SATA and What to Look For
1. Check Your Motherboard First
Before buying an NVMe SSD, confirm your motherboard has an M.2 slot and which PCIe generation it supports. Most boards since 2018 have at least one M.2 slot. Check your manual or specs page before ordering.
2. Gen 4 in a Gen 3 Slot Still Works
A PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drive installed in a Gen 3 slot will run at Gen 3 speeds (~3,500 MB/s max). You won't get Gen 4's full 7,000 MB/s, but the drive is fully compatible. Gen 4 drives are often the same price as Gen 3 — buy them anyway for future upgrades.
3. Bigger = Lower $/GB
A 2TB NVMe at $120 ($0.059/GB) beats a 1TB at $70 ($0.068/GB) in value. If your budget allows, buying a larger drive saves money per GB and avoids running out of space sooner.
4. SATA for Older Laptops
If you're upgrading a laptop more than 4–5 years old, it likely has a 2.5" SATA slot rather than M.2. A SATA SSD will still be 5–10x faster than the HDD it replaces and gives the machine a new lease on life.
