Buy Cheap SSDs: Find the Best Solid State Drive Deals in 2026

Looking for the best SSD deals? BuyPerUnit compares 1371+ NVMe and SATA SSDs ranked by price per gigabyte — the only metric that shows you which drives offer the best value for your money.

Right now, the cheapest SSD storage starts at just $0.000/GB, while the average across all drives is $13.872/GB. Whether you're building a gaming PC, upgrading a laptop, or adding storage to a PS5, we help you find the best deal. Need bulk storage? Compare hard drives here.

SSD Buying Guide: NVMe vs SATA and What to Look For

1. Check Your Motherboard First

Before buying an NVMe SSD, confirm your motherboard has an M.2 slot and which PCIe generation it supports. Most boards since 2018 have at least one M.2 slot. Check your manual or specs page before ordering.

2. Gen 4 in a Gen 3 Slot Still Works

A PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drive installed in a Gen 3 slot will run at Gen 3 speeds (~3,500 MB/s max). You won't get Gen 4's full 7,000 MB/s, but the drive is fully compatible. Gen 4 drives are often the same price as Gen 3 — buy them anyway for future upgrades.

3. Bigger = Lower $/GB

A 2TB NVMe at $120 ($0.059/GB) beats a 1TB at $70 ($0.068/GB) in value. If your budget allows, buying a larger drive saves money per GB and avoids running out of space sooner.

4. SATA for Older Laptops

If you're upgrading a laptop more than 4–5 years old, it likely has a 2.5" SATA slot rather than M.2. A SATA SSD will still be 5–10x faster than the HDD it replaces and gives the machine a new lease on life.

NVMe Gen 4 (M.2)$0.055–0.0905,000–7,000 MB/sPS5 expansion, AMD Ryzen, Intel 12th gen+
NVMe Gen 5 (M.2)$0.10–0.2010,000–14,000 MB/sWorkstations, enthusiast builds
SATA SSD (2.5")$0.045–0.070500–560 MB/sOlder laptops, SATA-only desktops

Frequently Asked Questions About SSDs

What is the cheapest SSD per GB right now?
The cheapest SSD storage per gigabyte is currently $0.0000/GB. NVMe SSDs at 2TB+ frequently offer the best price per GB — good deals are currently around $0.060/GB for NVMe Gen 4 and $0.045–0.055/GB for SATA SSDs.
Do I need NVMe Gen 4 or is Gen 3 fast enough?
For everyday use — gaming, loading Windows, running apps — Gen 3 NVMe is fast enough and you won't notice a difference. Gen 4 makes a real difference for large file transfers (video production, large game installs) and is required for PS5 storage expansion. If the price difference is small, buy Gen 4.
What SSD brands are most reliable?
Samsung (990 Pro, 870 EVO), WD (Black SN850X, Blue SN580), Crucial (T700, MX500), and SK Hynix (Platinum P41) are all tier-1 choices. Sabrent and Silicon Power offer strong value at lower prices. Avoid no-name drives with no warranty — they often use low-quality flash that degrades quickly.
Which SSD should I buy for a PS5?
The PS5 requires an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSD (2280 form factor recommended). Sony officially requires at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read speed. Top picks: WD Black SN850X, Samsung 990 Pro, Seagate FireCuda 530. A heatsink is optional but recommended for the PS5 bay.
When is the best time to buy cheap SSDs?
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Amazon Prime Day typically have the best SSD deals. Prices also drop steadily as new generations launch — Gen 4 drives are significantly cheaper today than at launch. We update rankings daily so you always see current pricing.

How We Find the Cheapest SSDs

BuyPerUnit calculates the price per gigabyte for every SSD by dividing the current price by the storage capacity. This gives you the true cost of storage, making it easy to compare NVMe and SATA drives of different sizes.

Products are ranked from best value (lowest $/GB) to worst. We update prices regularly from Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg to ensure you always see current deals. Click any product to view the latest price and purchase directly.
